In a recent interview with Football Insider, Paul Robinson has tipped Barcelona full-back Nelson Semedo to be a great addition for Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer as he said, “Nelson Semedo is one that would be a great addition for Wolves. He could have big sell on potential for them in the future. A fantastic signing for them if Wolves can pull it off.”
Robinson shared his thoughts after Fabrizio Romano posted a tweet on Monday claiming that Wolves were on the brink of sealing a move for the Portuguese defender.
The Lisboa-born player has managed to be productive with his performances over the past year, but he failed to win a trophy with Barca last season. Semedo appeared in 42 matches for the Catalan giants last season, finding the back of the net once and providing six assists on all fronts.
The 26-year-old proved his worth as a valuable squad player at the Nou Camp in the previous campaign as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.7 clearances and 1.5 dribbles per game in La Liga. The Portuguese international was excellent with his ball-distribution, having completed 89.5% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spain (stats via whoscored).
Semedo could be tempted to make a switch to the Molineux Stadium because he will get a chance to secure regular first-team football under the stewardship of Nuno Espirito Santo. He could also enjoy playing with some of his international teammates like Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Rui Patricio at the West Midlands club this season.
Semedo is a willing runner with the ball as he can quickly dribble past the opposition defenders out on the flanks. He is highly versatile as he can play in multiple positions across the field. The 14-time Portuguese international has mainly played as a right-back for Barca. However, he can also operate as a left-back or be used in a more advanced position as a wing-back or a winger down the right flank.
At 26, Semedo needs to guarantee regular playing minutes if he intends to become a household name in European football someday. Hence, signing for Wolves could provide him with a great platform to find some consistency and reach for the stars in English football.
Semedo will fit into Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of play quite well as he is comfortable playing in both wing-back positions. He could potentially serve as an excellent replacement for Matt Doherty, who decided to join Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.
With all things considered, the West Midlands side should concentrate on getting a deal over the line for Semedo as he will enhance the quality of their first-team significantly at the Molineux for the coming seasons.
