Rodolfo Pizarro is set to make a return to Mexican football with Mazatlán FC after a brief stint with AEK Athens in Greece. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder, known for his creativity and versatility, had joined AEK Athens in July 2023, but after just a few months, he’s decided to return to Liga MX, a league he’s deeply familiar with.

Pizarro’s career has been marked by stints with several prominent clubs. He began his professional journey with Pachuca, where he won the Liga MX title in 2016. He then moved to Chivas, where he added more silverware to his collection, including the Liga MX Clausura title, the Copa MX, and the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League in 2018. His successes in Mexico paved the way for a move to MLS, where he joined Inter Miami in 2020. He was instrumental in their early success, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup with them. Pizarro also had a short return to Monterrey before his move to Greece.

At Mazatlán, Pizarro will be expected to fill a key role in their midfield as they aim to boost their standing in the league. Reports suggest that the deal includes a contract through 2025. His debut is anticipated for the club's match against Monterrey on Saturday, September 21st, though he won’t be ready for their home game against Necaxa on Wednesday, September 18th.

Mazatlán currently sits in 13th place, with one win from the opening seven games. Five points away from the playoff places, they need a late charge to fight their way into the post-season action. However, a signing such as Pizarro could prove to be pivotal. A player with plenty of Liga MX experience, whilst also being in the prime of his career, could be the boost the club needs.
