Manchester City midfielder and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has labelled Milan’s Alvaro Morata ‘exemplary’ after the Rossoneri forward confessed that he had struggled with serious mental health issues before his move to Serie A.
Morata admitted that he has previously suffered from panic attacks during an interview in October. The Spain national team captain also confessed that it was difficult to continue playing in Spain and for Atletico Madrid due to the constant pressure and trolling away from the pitch.
Despite his personal battles, Morata played an important role and captained the side as Spain were crowned champions of Europe at EURO 2024 over the summer.
Rodri says that he knew something wasn’t quite right with his teammate over the summer, but has applauded his courage in speaking out and for the fact that he was still able to perform at such a high level.
“I already knew that something was wrong with him during the European Championship,” Rodri said in a recent interview with El Horminguero, reported via Corriere dello Sport.
“He is a good friend of mine and I understood that there was a problem,” the Manchester City midfielder continued.
“The mind does not factor in money and fame. We are not prepared for certain situations, like losing a match or dealing with the enormous pressure.
“When Morata, the national team captain, had the courage to open up, I found him exemplary.”
