América failed to gain revenge on Monterrey for their loss in the recent Concacaf Champions League final.

The Azulcrema were already assured of top spot in the Apertura table, so the points were far more valuable for the visitors to the Estadio Azteca.

Neither side looked like seriously troubling the scoreboard until just over 20 minutes remaining when Salvador Reyes was taken down in the area by last defender Alán Montes.

A straight red card was shown for the infringement before Roger Martínez stepped up to take the penalty. The América striker slipped as he took the spot kick, but the ball still managed to loop into the net.

However the drama continued as Rayados claimed a double touch occurred, with a VAR review confirming that the Colombia international had indeed kicked the ball off his standing foot, thus committing a foul in the process.

Henry Martín went close with a header in the dying stages, but Monterrey held out for a point that wasn’t enough to lift them into the top eight spots.

Monterrey will now face an away tie in the repachaje, while América must wait to see how the first round of play-offs pan out before they learn who their quarter-final opponents will be.
