It’s never a dull day at Barcelona during transfer windows, either in terms of arrivals or departures. The flavor of the media in the last week or so has been the future of 33-year-old star Ilkay Gundogan.

The Barcelona #22 has been linked with an exit in the coming days. Hansi Flick left him out of the squad for the Valencia game fuelling further speculation but the coach confirmed that he is counting on the German.

Despite this, there is a feeling that the ex-Man City player might not be around in Spain for too long. As per reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, there is a chance that Gundogan will leave the club before the conclusion of the transfer window.

Romano, who hardly gets it wrong during the transfer window has claimed that Barcelona is open to letting the 33-year-old leave and that the player’s camp is looking out for options in the coming days.

We covered a story earlier today exploring the factors behind the 33-year-old’s potential exit from the club. Having signed Dani Olmo, there is an overbooking of midfielders in the squad and Gundogan, due to his age is one of those Barcelona can live without.

It is often very easy to forget what the German midfielder did for the club last season. He was Barcelona’s most consistent player playing almost every single minute for Xavi’s team at a time when the entire midfield was struggling with injuries.

However, with Dani Olmo yet to be registered, Barcelona need to make some tough decisions and sacrificing Gundogan is one such instance. Fans will always love the German for what he did for the club last season. The next few days will give us a clearer picture of the situation and let’s see how it pans out.
