Manchester United are not guaranteed to add another summer signing to their ranks before the August 30 deadline, but if they did, you’d expect it would be in the midfield.

That’s what the majority of the reports doing the rounds suggest, anyway.

Yet, Fabrizio Romano has shared an intriguing update today, which hints at another defensive acquisition potentially making the move to Old Trafford. Three of United’s four arrivals under INEOS thus far have been for the backline: centre-halves Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, as well as fullback Noussair Mazraoui.

Romano claims that there’s one Premier League player who’d jump at the chance of joining the Red Devils in the closing stages of the window, primarily because he’s already acquainted with the majority of the staff and squad.

“Another player who would love to return to Manchester United is Sergio Reguilon,” the transfer reporter revealed.

“He was already at the club one year ago, and he would be really open to returning. Man United are really aware of his situation at Tottenham, and that may be an opportunity again in the final days because he has to leave Tottenham in the final days.”

The Spaniard spent the first half of the 2023/2024 term on loan from Tottenham Hotspur before United activated his break clause in the winter, after which he spent the remainder of the campaign with Brentford.

Now back in North London and out of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, Reguilon is expected to complete a permanent transfer away from Spurs.

Truthfully, a Reguilon reunion wouldn’t make much sense for either party. He still has one year remaining on his contract, so United would have to fork out a fee to bring him back to Manchester, and such funds could most definitely be put to better use elsewhere.

Additionally, the left-back won’t rank above Mazraoui or Diogo Dalot in the pecking order – nor Luke Shaw when he returns from his setback. Game time would be incredibly difficult to come by unless the club are struck with an injury crisis akin to last season’s.
