Rotherham United have been told to sign a "fox in the box" striker who could add some much-needed pace to their attack this month.

The Millers made 14 signings in the summer as they looked to make an immediate return to the Championship under Steve Evans, but it's been a difficult campaign for the side from South Yorkshire, and they're in the bottom half of the table.

Their defence has been solid, and they boast the seventh-best defensive record in the division, but Rotherham have struggled for goals, scoring just 21 League One goals in 23 games, with only three teams scoring less.

This will concern Evans, and it's clear that something has to be done to address this problem in January.

Unless there's a drastic upturn in performances, the chances of Rotherham mounting a play-off push this season look slim, but an improved second half of the season could lay the foundations for a successful 2025/26 campaign.

We asked our Rotherham United fan pundit, Tom Eyre, what sort of signing he'd like to see the club make this month, and it's clear that he feels the Millers' attack lacks pace.

Speaking to Football League World, Tom said: "We need a fox in the box, pacey striker.

“I think our defence speaks for itself. We’ve got the seventh-best defensive stats in the league, so that sorts itself out pretty well, but we’re not scoring enough goals and that’s been proven in recent games.

"We won against Lincoln and drew 0-0 with Huddersfield, but those are two games we could have scored more goals in if we had a pacey, clinical striker.

“That’s what I’d be looking for if I was in the market.”

Rotherham United's strikers haven't lived up to expectations

On paper, Rotherham United have three quality strikers at League One level, but the trio have not been prolific this season.

Sam Nombe has scored four goals in 22 League One appearances, Jordan Hugill has scored just one, and Jonson Clarke-Harris has scored six goals in 18 appearances, a respectable return, but quite some way from the numbers he registered during the 2020/21 and 2022/23 campaigns.

As Tom alluded to, the Millers are lacking a pacey striker option who can chip in with goals, and Evans will be fully aware that their goalscoring record needs to improve if they want to compete in the upper echelons of the League One table.

Given the squad they possess, Rotherham should be doing a lot better than they are, and this month gives Evans the chance to freshen things up and a striker should be a priority for him this month.
