Sam Hiatt joins Portland Thorns as the team adds experience and defensive stability | OneFootball

Portland Thorns announced the signing of defender Sam Hiatt as a free agent, with a contract running through the 2026 season and an option for 2027. Hiatt joins the Thorns bringing proven NWSL experience, consistency in her performances, and a clear drive to grow, qualities that caught the eye of the club and head coach Rob Gale.

"After speaking with Sam, I was impressed by her character, her desire to play in Portland, and her commitment to improving her game as part of this team," emphasized Gale, who highlighted how well Hiatt fits the profile that Portland Thorns is trying to build.

NWSL experience

Before signing with Portland, Sam Hiatt played the last season with NJ/NY Gotham FC, where she made 17 appearances for the club, starting 12 of them, scoring her first professional goal in a 3-1 win over Orlando Pride.

But her impact in the league began earlier with a standout run at Seattle Reign, her hometown team. Picked as the 33rd overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, Hiatt quickly established herself as a reliable starter, totaling 45 matches over four seasons.

The 2022 season was the highlight of her tenure with the Reign. Hiatt featured in 20 of 22 matches, playing a key role in eight shutouts and helping the team secure the prestigious NWSL Shield.

Rob Gale underlined the significance of that experience when discussing the signing: "She’s proven herself at this level and fits both the positional need and the player profile we’re looking for."

College success

Sam Hiatt did a lot in college before she was able to establish herself in the NWSL. She started off her collegiate career at Boston College, where as a freshman, she played in 19 matches, had one goal, and five assists. Later, she moved to Stanford University, whereby she reached new heights.

At Stanford, she made 53 appearances, netting two goals and making nine assists. More important, she played a big role in the team's success - helping the Cardinals win two NCAA championships in 2017 and 2019.

International experience and ambition

Apart from her club and college success, Sam Hiatt has represented the United States at the youth level. She played in numerous age categories and represented the U.S. U-20 that participated in the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Hiatt's mix of NWSL consistency, college titles, and international experience thus makes her a very important addition that Portland Thorns will want to have as the team gears up for the coming seasons.
