As reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are involved in a number of potential deals regarding the future of multiple strikers around Europe, including Manchester City’s Julián Álvarez.
Atlético Madrid are currently closing in on a deal to sign the Argentina international from City, in a move that could see Atlético striker Samu Omorodion sign for Chelsea.
Chelsea already saw a €32.5million plus add-ons bid rejected for the Spanish youth international earlier this summer, but it is understood that the potential deal for Álvarez has seen Diego Simeone’s side ‘soften their resistance’ to sell Omorodion, who could now be subject to a €40m move to Stamford Bridge.
Despite the 20-year-old having not yet made an appearance for Atlético, The potential deal would see them make a significant profit on the €6m they signed Omorodion for from Granada last summer, having instantly sent him out on loan to Deportivo Alavés.
Albeit still a raw talent, the 6’4″ forward scored nine goals and made one assist in 22 La Liga starts last season, standing out with exceptional pace, power, and attacking instinct that make him a significant threat in a variety of situations.
Omorodion can pin defenders to hold up-play or spin in behind and run the channels, act as an aerial outlet or drive at defenders after receiving the ball to feet, whilst possessing the movement sharply create space in the box to get on the end of crosses or slipped through passes.
Meanwhile, he has a desire to shoot at any oppurtunity, which, when paired with his excellent, and somewhat inconsistent, ball-striking and composure, mean he’s able to test the goalkeeper from tight angles and finish in one-versus-one situations.
However, as indicated, Omorodion does need time to develop, especially if he makes the move to the English top flight. Chelsea’s other dealings suggest they are considering this, with Ornstein reporting that the talks between The Blues and Napoli over seperate deals for Romelu Lukaku and Victor Osimhen are expected to continue, and are independent from the Álvarez-Omorodion ‘domino’.
Enzo Maresca’s new side are also expected to sanction some departures too. Academy product Armando Broja is set to be sold following his unsuccessful loan at Fulham at the latter end of last season.
David Datro Fofana is also on the way out. The Ivorian signed for Chelsea for €12m in January 2023, but has only made four appearances for the club due to loans at Union Berlin and Burnley respectively, and is now attracting interest from Steve Cooper’s Leicester City, who are leading the race to sign the 21-year-old.
