The 27-year-old Christopher McVey also brings a proven track record of success in MLS and European soccer to San Diego FC. A Swedish-American defender, before coming to the North American league, he played for IF Elfsborg in Sweden's top flight between 2017 and 2021, making 42 appearances during that time. He was also part of the squad that played in the UEFA Conference League qualification rounds, proving his mettle in higher-level competition.
McVey, who started his MLS career with Inter Miami CF in 2022, quickly became a regular starter. In his first season, he ranked 8th league-wide in minutes played, totaling 3,040. He made 61 appearances, scored one goal, and helped the club capture the 2023 Leagues Cup title over two seasons with the Herons.
In 2024, McVey was traded to DC United and didn't lose his reliability for a single moment. The right back played 28 matches-each as a starter-and netted a goal in one draw against Chicago Fire FC. A spell at DC United saw McVey further cement his status as an extremely reliable, versatile defender who can play both in the middle and on the left.
San Diego FC's sporting director, Tyler Heaps, emphasized McVey's importance in building a competitive squad for the club's inaugural season.
"Chris brings versatility and experience to our team. He's proven that he can defend at a high level in this league and will come in to compete for a spot in our defensive line. We're excited to welcome him to San Diego FC as we continue building a strong and balanced team for our first season."
McVey's versatility-the fact that he can play across multiple defensive positions-will, no doubt, be very instrumental for head coach Mikey Varas. He will be in charge of setting up the team, as it readies for an official MLS debut in February 2025.
