San Diego FC moved to the market and signed 16-year-old forward Anisse Saidi from the Philadelphia Union, strengthening their squad. This strategic move signals not only ambition by the Californian club during its inaugural MLS season but also a sharp focus on the league's future.
The deal between San Diego FC and Philadelphia Union involved $100,000 in General Allocation Money, divided over the next two seasons. In addition, the Union could receive up to $250,000 more in conditional GAM and retained a percentage of any future trades involving Saidi.
This is a rare kind of deal for such a young player. San Diego FC clearly sees Saidi as a rare gem, and the investment reflects that. It's a move that reinforces the club's commitment to developing local talent and shows that in the MLS, long-term planning is an increasingly big priority.
Anisse Saidi came through the Philadelphia Union's prestigious youth academy and has already made a name for himself in some major competitions. Currently the captain of the Union's U-17 team, Saidi led his side to victory in last year's Generation Adidas Cup.
Saidi also shone for Tunisia's U-17 national team, netting four goals in four matches during the qualifiers for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. The forward combines natural talent with uncommon maturity for his age-a factor that caught San Diego FC's attention.
The sporting director of San Diego, Tyler Heaps, did not hide his feelings: "We're happy to sign Anisse to a homegrown contract and welcome him to San Diego FC. At just 16 years old, he has already shown tremendous potential as a forward. While this is an exciting step in his career, we recognize that his journey is just beginning.
San Diego FC will make their MLS debut this February against the LA Galaxy, one of the league's most traditional teams. Even as an investment for the future, the signing of Saidi could have big implications in the first season.
With his young age and versatility up front, Saidi can become a wild card in tricky matches, assuming the team can work out a smooth integration process. His addition to the squad further reinforces San Diego's narrative of being willing to innovate and hit the ground running in the MLS hot seat as quickly as possible.
The MLS has been prominent in recent years as a stage for the development of young talent, both at home and from abroad. Players like Saidi represent the future of the league, which aims to balance out experienced veterans with promising prospects.
San Diego's signing of Saidi was also symbolic of how the MLS market is continuing to evolve, more attentive to emerging talent and heavy on investment in their acquisition.
