Small but mighty San Marino have shown some significant improvements this international window.
The lowest-ranked side in men’s professional football managed to get on the scoresheet in the dying moments against Finland through substitute Filippo Berardi.
Yet despite the slim loss, the moment was a historic one as it was the first time they scored in three consecutive games across their 37-year existence (Denmark, Kazakhstan and Finland).
And the goal means it’s now the second time they have scored three goals in a calendar year. The last time that happened? A staggering 22 years ago.
When you break down their overall record in front of goal, 9.7% of San Marino’s international goals have been scored in their last three matches (three total).
It’s a long way to go for FIFA’s 207th-ranked side, but it’s an impressive personal best no doubt.
