Santos FC claimed a 2-1 victory over Grêmio in the Women’s Brazilian Championship. The game was valid for the sixth round, in Porto-Alegre on Monday.
Yet another win saw the village’s mermaids continue their unbeaten start to the season, while also moving level on points with leaders Palmeiras.
In a counterattack sequence, Gisseli crossed into the middle of the area and, at the moment of finishing,
the ball hit the defender’s arm. Defender Andressa could only manage a weak effort, much to the delight of the rival goalkeeper.
Tricolor then broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, Jane received the ball in the penalty area, adjusted for the left leg and took a perfectly timed shot to make for a good goal.
The Mermaids increased the intensity in their play and equalized three minutes after conceding the first goal. Ketlen, the greatest scorer in the club’s history, took advantage of Amanda’s low cross and leveled the scoring.
In the 82nd minute, the game took a twist as Tchula was given a straight red card for a needless offence.
Then, in a good individual move, Cristiane hit the pass between the gaucho defense and left Alana facing the goalkeeper Raíssa. The midfielder only had to stroll the ball into the next for Santos’ second and what would go on to be the match-winning goal four minutes from time.
Vice-leader and tied with Palmeiras in points, Santos returns to the field for the Women’s Brazilian Championship on Thursday against Flamengo. It will be a decisive game as Santos will be aiming to claim another victory and perhaps assume leadership of the Brazilian Championship.
