América left it late to bag all three points against Tijuana at the Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Scorers: Córdova PEN 90′, Ibarra 90+4′
Las Águilas dominated a scoreless first half at the Estadio Azteca, enjoying 64% of possession and registering the sole effort on target.
Renato Ibarra replaced Henry Martín with just over a quarter of an hour remaining, the winger back in Azulcrema colours 18 months after being told he had no future at the club due to off-field matters.
It looked like a draw was on the cards until Luis Gamíz, who had just been introduced as a substitute by the visitors, caught Federico Viñas on the hip with a reckless follow through.
The referee checked the incident on the monitor before returning to show a red card to Gamíz.
Sebastián Córdova stepped up to send Jonathan Orozco the wrong way with the clock already past the 90-minute mark.
Ibarra put the result beyond doubt deep into injury time with a low drive from the edge of the area with his weaker left foot.
It was América’s fifth straight league win and leaves them three points clear of León at the top of the Apertura table.
Tijuana have yet to register a victory this season, and are rooted to the bottom with just two points from their opening six games.
