We take a look at what Coventry City will be looking to avoid in the January transfer window

With the January transfer window in full flow, Coventry City boss Frank Lampard will be looking to ensure he finishes the month with a stronger squad than he started with.

It's been a disappointing season for the Sky Blues so far, leading to long-time manager Mark Robins being sacked and replaced by Lampard in November, and the former Chelsea man will be hoping for an improved second half of the season.

While the play-offs aren't completely out of the question just yet, it looks unlikely that the Sky Blues will be able to force their way into the top six this season, and the second half of the season should act as the perfect way to lay the foundations ready for a successful 2025/26 campaign.

The January transfer window will likely play an important role in determining whether Coventry enjoy a successful second half of the season or not, so we've taken a look at two nightmare transfer scenarios the Sky Blues will be hoping to avoid this month.

Selling Haji Wright

After an impressive first season at the CBS Arena which saw him bag 19 goals for the Sky Blues, including three in their run to the FA Cup semi-final, Haji Wright has been a rare bright spot for Coventry this season.

He's the club's top scorer by some considerable distance this season, and it's no surprise that the American international forward is attracting interest from elsewhere.

It's been reported that the 26-year-old is attracting interest from Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Leicester City, and Lampard should be desperately keen to retain Wright's services this month.

Losing Wright would be a big enough blow to Coventry, but losing him to Leicester, one of their biggest rivals, would certainly hurt supporters, especially as it looks likely the Foxes will be making a speedy return to the Championship after winning promotion just last season.

The Sky Blues forked out a fee of £7.7 million to sign Wright in the summer of 2023, and it's been reported that Premier League clubs would have to pay £15 million to sign him this month, meaning they would double their money on the 26-year-old.

However, Wright's goals have ensured that Coventry have stayed away from the relegation fight this season, and losing him in January with little time to find an adequate replacement would be a disaster, regardless of the transfer fee they'd receive.

Missing out on Rob Holding after a centre-back departs

Coventry have been linked with a move for Crystal Palace defender Rob Holding, with the former Arsenal man frozen out at Selhurst Park after a reported falling out with Oliver Glasner.

Holding would prove an excellent addition to the Sky Blues squad, and he was playing regularly for the Gunners just two seasons ago as they battled for the Premier League title with Manchester City, showing the quality he possesses.

Liam Kitching has been linked with a departure from the CBS Arena this month, with Blackburn Rovers reportedly keen to secure his signature, and if Kitching was to depart with no replacement signed, it could leave Lampard short of options at the back.

If players are going to leave, it's important that Coventry ensure they secure the signing of Holding, and it would be a disaster for the Sky Blues if they spent all of January pursuing the Palace man just to miss out on him in the end.

That's a situation Lampard should be keen to avoid and he must try and get Holding's signing secured in the opening weeks of the window.
