Sergio Rico given green light to return to PSG training after near-fatal accident | OneFootball

RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins has revealed that Sergio Rico (30) has been given the green light to resume training with Paris Saint-Germain, less than a year after a near-fatal horse accident in Spain.

The Spanish goalkeeper was left in a coma, which lasted several weeks, following a head injury sustained after falling from his horse during a holiday back in Seville in May 2023. According to a medical report, Rico was half a centimetre away from dying, however, he miraculously now harbours the hope of featuring for PSG later this season.

Upon his release from the hospital, the PSG goalkeeper recalled looking “like a toothpick“ after losing 20kg. Rico’s thoughts immediately returned to getting back on the pitch. “My ultimate goal is to be ready with the team before the end of the season,” the Spaniard told PSG’s media channels back in September.

However, at the time, it was unclear whether this would ever become a reality. Rico is now set for a return. The Spaniard has received authorisation from his doctors, allowing him to return to PSG first-team training. Hawkins reports that the goalkeeper has now “fully recovered” from the near-fatal accident last May. Rico could return to PSG training between now and the end of April. With Rico’s contract with Les Parisiens expiring at the end of the season, it is unclear whether he will feature again for the French club, or whether a renewal is in the pipeline.
