Empoli remain unbeaten in Week 6 and in front of their local rivals after this goalless stalemate with Fiorentina in the Tuscan Derby.
The hosts had a surprisingly better start to the campaign than their local rivals. It was also a long injury list, missing Youssef Maleh, Szymon Zurkowski, Luca Belardinelli, Saba Sazanov, Samuele Perisan and Tyronne Ebuehi. The Viola finally got their first win of the season against Lazio, but Rolando Mandragora and Marin Pongracic were not fully fit, so they moved to a 4-2-3-1 with Albert Gudmundsson’s first start.
Ardian Ismajli should’ve scored in the third minute, but just failed to connect with the short corner from six yards.
Edoardo Bove’s blushes were spared when he fired wide of an open goal, as the whistle had blown for an earlier foul during a clumsy Empoli attempt to play out from the back.
Andrea Colpani’s glancing header flashed wide from a Dodo cross, while Giuseppe Pezzella won the ball back in the centre circle and surged forward to sting David De Gea’s gloves, as Sebastiano Esposito couldn’t make the most of the rebound.
Robin Gosens blasted a volley off target and Pietro Comuzzo did enough to cut across and ruin the Tino Anjorin counter-attack.
Moise Kean ballooned into the stands from the edge of the box after shaking off defenders and Lucas Beltran nodded a corner wide, while the Emmanuel Ekong strike was charged down.
