Fiorentina were denied by the Jesse Joronen brick wall and were again held to a disappointing stalemate, this time by Venezia.

The Viola started their season with two dramatic draws in Serie A and the Conference League, held 3-3 on Thursday by Puskas Akademia in the first leg of the play-off. Marin Pongracic was suspended after his red card against Parma, with Albert Gudmundsson not yet ready to debut, but Amir Richardson got his first start. The Lagunari missed Mato Jajalo, Gianluca Busio and Bjarki Bjarkason, with Joel Pohjanpalo fit for the bench. Jay Idzes and Antonio Candela returned from bans, but Tanner Tessmann is frozen out pending a transfer.

Anderson’s shot was deflected over and on the resulting corner Idzes fired over from close range on the well-worked routine.

Christian Kouame thought he had scored a stunning overhead kick from six yards, but Jesse Joronen palmed it off the line.

Fabiano Parisi sprinted down the left and smashed a shot at the near post to sting Joronen’s gloves, while the goalkeeper also pushed an Amir Richardson low drive round the base of the upright.

After the restart, Joronen was again decisive on Kean and rescued by Marin Sverko’s desperate tackle to stop Kouame turning in the rebound.

Cristiano Biraghi tried a repeat of the free kick that gave Fiorentina a point against Parma, but this time it was just over the bar.

Pietro Terracciano also had to make two big saves, first on the Francesco Zampano curler, then the Antonio Raimondo tap-in from six yards.

Another Biraghi scorcher flashed wide of the far post, but they were unable to get more than a point.
