Fiorentina snuck into the Serie A top four after rising to a 2-0 victory at home against the title-chasing Inter thanks to goals from Luca Ranieri and Moise Kean, in a match that lasted just 73 minutes of regular time.

This game had originally begun on December 1, but was abandoned in the first half after Edoardo Bove collapsed on the pitch.

Fiorentina were the more impacted of the two sides as a result of the rules on player eligibility. Both coaches could only field players who were registered at the time of the original fixture, which meant no Pablo Mari, Nicolo Fagioli, Michael Folorunsho, Cher Ndour or Nicolo Zaniolo, all of whom joined in January.

Additionally, Fiorentina also sold Lucas Martinez Quarta, Michael Kayode, Cristiano Biraghi, Riccardo Sottil, Jonathan Ikone and Christian Kouame, which meant that there were only seven players on the Viola bench, two of whom were goalkeepers and one being Andrea Colpani, who was not fully fit.

Inter, meanwhile, had a familiar line-up at their disposal, as there were no major departures over the course of the January transfer window, and Nicola Zalewski, the club’s only addition, was the only available player to miss out.

The action began with a Fiorentina throw-in in the 17th minute.

Carlos Augusto thought he had put Inter ahead 12 minutes into tonight’s game after stabbing home Alessandro Bastoni’s original effort, but a lengthy VAR check followed and he was later deemed to have been marginally offside.

Two minutes after the VAR decision, Yann Sommer was called into action at the other end, denying the head of Moise Kean from point-blank range.

Though Inter had the ball in the back of the net earlier on, it was Fiorentina and Dodo with the biggest opportunity of the first half.

Kean had done very well to free the Brazilian on the right flank, which allowed him to race into the area one-on-one, but he came at a slightly tight angle and wasn’t able to bend his effort on target, instead trickling wide of the far post for a goal kick.

Fiorentina got themselves ahead just shy of the hour mark. It was an outswigning corner from Rolando Mandragora, which was met by Ranieri, who placed a very well-taken first-time finish past Sommer from 12 yards out.

Kean doubled the hosts’ advantage just over 10 minutes later, planting a free header past Sommer from the middle of the area after a brilliant ball in off the right flank from Dodo.

Kean got his second of the night in the final moments of regular time. A hospital back-pass from Federico Dimarco sent him through one-on-one. Sommer came rushing out into no-man’s land, but was rounded 35 yards out as Kean’s shot trickled in.

Tonight’s result sends Fiorentina up into fourth place in the Serie A standings. Inter remain in second, but have an even bigger task to catch Napoli at the top now.

Ranieri 59’, Kean 68’, 89′.
