FIGC has halted every activity on Monday to pay homage to Pope Francis, who passed away in the morning at age 88. The four Serie A games on the schedule, an entire Serie B round, and the matches from the Serie C Group B, plus all the amateurs and youth fixtures, have been postponed to a later date.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio had been battling lung problems at the beginning of 2025, La Repubblica informs. He had been hospitalized for two months to undergo treatment. He had been allowed to head home about two weeks ago and partially officiated the Easter mass on Sunday. Born in 1936 in Buenos Aires, he was elected as the head of the church by the conclave on March 13th, 2013, following Joseph Ratzinger’s resignation. He was a well-known football fan.
Serie A had four games on tap on Monday: Torino-Udinese, Cagliari-Fiorentina, Genoa-Lazio, and Parma-Juventus. Among the eight teams involved, only the Viola still play in a cup. According to Tuttomercatoweb, it’s almost impossible that the matches will take place on Tuesday. Three of them could be played next week, while the remaining one on May 13th.
At this stage, there’s no word about the two return legs of the Coppa Italia, Inter vs Milan and Bologna vs Empoli. They remain scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Easter Monday has routinely been a busy day for Serie A. Instead, the League held three matches on Sunday as well for the first time in 47 years.
The tilts will occur on Wednesday, with kickoff set at 6.30 pm local time for all of them.
