Serie A | Lazio 1-1 Roma: Soule and Romagnoli share the derby spoils

Matias Soulé replied to the Alessio Romagnoli opener with a scorching strike off the underside of the bar, as Lazio and Roma find a point apiece does little for either side in the Derby della Capitale.

This was not just the local derby, but also a direct battle for European places, especially with other results this weekend. The Aquile were stuttering and lost the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final 2-0 to Bodo/Glimt on Thursday evening. Taty Castellanos returned from injury, with Matteo Guendouzi back from suspension, but Nuno Tavares, Patric and Arijon Ibrahimovic missed out. The Giallorossi’s run of seven consecutive Serie A victories was ended by a 1-1 draw with Juventus, but while Alexis Saelemaekers returned from his ban, Paulo Dybala and Saud Abdulhamid were still injured.

It was a fiery start, as Mile Svilar fingertipped an Alessio Romagnoli header out from under the bar from Gustav Isaksen’s free kick. The Roma goalkeeper was forced into another difficult save by Isaksen at the near post after a mazy run.

While the Giallorossi had long spells of possession, the chances continued to be for Lazio, as Svilar pushed the wonderful Isaksen left-foot curler out of the far top corner.

The deadlock was broken straight after the restart when two lifelong Lazio fans combined, as Luca Pellegrini whipped a free kick across the six-yard box for Romagnoli, where this time Svilar was beaten by the precise header at the near post. Romagnoli ran to celebrate under the Curva Nord and kissed the club badge on his jersey.

Roma created their first genuine scoring opportunity when Gianluca Mancini steered a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner with a fine header, but Christos Mandas scrambled across to claw it out of the far bottom corner.

The Aquile threatened again, Svilar getting his fingertips to a Matteo Guendouzi glancing header on Isaksen’s free kick, while Zeki Celik’s strike was straight at Mandas from the edge of the box.

A trademark Mattia Zaccagni curler flashed just wide of the far post, but Roma equalised with a moment of magic, as Soulé swept a sensational first-time left-foot strike from well outside the box that bounced off the underside of the bar, with goal-line technology quickly confirming it had crossed over completely.

Pedro came off the bench against his former club and stung Svilar’s gloves from the edge of the area, then Svilar had to make a double save to stop Evan N’Dicka scoring an own goal and Boulaye Dia pouncing on the rebound.

Tijjani Noslin tried and failed to bundle a corner over the line in stoppages, mistiming the leap.
