A quick glance at the scores in Italy’s Serie C this weekend may leave you scratching your head.
Why?
Because Pro Piacenza were on the receiving end of 20 goals against Cuneo.
Let us explain that one.
Currently in a desperate state financial, Pro Piacenza have already forfeited four games this season. Had they forfeited a fifth, they would have been kicked out of the league.
So they managed to field a team of just seven players – the minimum allowed – to play the game. All seven are teenagers and one, just 19, both captained and managed the side on Sunday.
That left them with a pretty unique looking team-sheet.
Needless to say, it didn’t end well.
The club’s senior players and staff have walked out as they have not been paid since August.
Cuneo scored 15 goals before half-time but clearly eased off after the break.
Before Sunday’s game, the hosts had managed just 18 goals in their previous 24 Serie C games this season.
In case you weren’t sure, Pro Piacenza sit bottom of Serie C with just eight points from 20 games. They’ve had eight points deducted already this season and we suspect there more pain is on the horizon.
