Liverpool Summer Departures: Who’s Heading for the Anfield Exit?

As Liverpool chase a landmark 20th league title, the conversation on Anfield Index turns to what may be an equally seismic shift off the pitch. Trev Downey and Dave Davis discussed which players could realistically leave Anfield this summer—and the list is far from short.

Darwin Nunez: “If he’s not doing it, then he’s up for grabs”

Trev and Dave didn’t hold back on Darwin Nunez. Despite clear admiration for the striker’s work rate and physical presence, doubts over his output remain.

“I like Darwin,” said Davis, “but he has to do it. And if he’s not doing it, then he’s up for grabs.” Trev echoed the sentiment, suggesting there’s “no rehabilitation” in sight and that “Darwin Nunez is a man who could bring in a lot of money.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold: “There isn’t this much smoke without a fire”

Trent’s potential departure to Real Madrid was treated with brutal honesty. “The lad wants to go, you know—it’s as simple as that,” said Trev. “We all saw the interviews… talking about being the local lad and wanting to be captain of Liverpool. Then he’s talking about the Ballon d’Or.”

He added, “I’m not going to wish him well at Real Madrid. That’s completely anathema to me.”

Wataru Endo: “I adore Endo… but the minutes don’t lie”

While Trev Downey described Endo as someone he “adores” and praised his attitude—“shielding, tackling anything that moves, your own player, anything”—he acknowledged a harsh truth: “The minutes don’t lie… how little he’s used.” Davis agreed, citing rumours of German clubs ready to make Endo “a key piece” in their summer plans.

Federico Chiesa: “I don’t see him being part of the plans going forward”

Chiesa’s future was touched on with finality. “As much as I’d love to think he’s rehabilitated himself, I don’t see him being part of the plans going forward,” Trev admitted. Fans, he said, have admired Chiesa’s “attitude and application,” but that may not be enough.

Joe Gomez: “He’s a brilliant footballer… but I can see him going”

Gomez’s situation is more nuanced. Downey was full of praise—“a brilliant footballer”—but pointed to his injury record and the desire to be a first-teamer elsewhere. “I can see him going… to be Top Dog,” he added.

Alisson Becker: “Could we make some decent wedge on moving on Alisson?”

Trev speculated on one of the biggest shocks of the summer—Alisson potentially being sold. “Could we make some decent wedge on moving on Alisson?” he asked. “I could see both Ali and Quivine [Kelleher] on their bikes this summer.”

It’s a comment likely to unsettle fans, but Downey argued that the goalkeeping department is “doing quite well” and hinted at Liverpool being open to reinvention.

Harvey Elliott: “If he can’t get into the team…”

Elliott’s lack of minutes raised concerns. “If he can’t get any minutes… he’ll be thinking, ‘I need to play,’” Davis said. Downey agreed that, like Endo, Elliott could attract suitors, especially given his potential as an international-level player.

As Dave Davis neatly put it, “There’s never been so much doubt about the squad.” And Trev Downey summed it up best: “I don’t see how it’s anything but a massive summer.”

With such significant figures under scrutiny, Liverpool’s post-title reality under Arne Slot could look very different.
