Sheffield United have appointed Ash Thompson as their new head coach.

The Blades announced the news this morning via a post on their official club website.

Thompson has been promoted into the first team head coach role after impressing with his work within the club’s Professional Game Academy environment. He helped guide a young Sheffield United side to Professional Game Academy Cup final success against Chelsea last season.

Sheffield United could hand first team opportunities to a number of youngsters this season and the club have determined that Thompson is the ideal person to take the team forward.

After being appointed Sheffield United head coach, Thompson said “It’s very exciting, it’s a great opportunity for me. I’ve been at the club for three years, I’ve been very close to the first team in that time, so it’s a great opportunity for me to lead the project and put my own stamp on it.

“We’ve come a very long way in that time and it’s a great opportunity for me as we embark on the next part of that journey. It’s a transformational time for the club and the team, but with that provides opportunity to bring in new ideas and refresh and that’s something we’re very keen to push on with.”

Thompson will be assisted by long-serving Sheffield United coach Luke Turner.
