Sheffield United keen on striking transfer agreement for former international midfielder | OneFootball

Sheffield United are interested in recruiting Alanyaspor midfielder Leroy Fer during the January transfer window, according to this morning’s report on Patreon from Alan Nixon.

The 32-year-old has plied his trade in England before, first arriving at Norwich City in 2013 before moving on to Queens Park Rangers during the following year, spending two years at Loftus Road.

He was also able to make a positive impact at Swansea City, though he wasn’t able to save them from the drop as the Welsh outfit were relegated back to the Championship in 2018.

The Dutchman stayed with the Swans for a year in the second tier though before making the move back to his home nation to ply his trade with Feyenoord, where he spent his youth career before blossoming into a full international for the Netherlands.

Currently at Alanyaspor, Paul Heckingbottom is reportedly keen on luring him back to England as a potential alternative option to Sander Berge with the Norwegian suffering with injury problems throughout his time at Bramall Lane.

At 32, this shouldn’t be too much of an expensive deal so you would feel they would be able to get a deal over the line for him if they went ahead and pursued his signature.

However, it’s currently unclear whether the Blades will be able to match his wage demands because he may be earning a decent salary in Turkey and may not want to take a pay cut to move.

In fact, it may take a pay rise for him to pack up his bags and switch country again, although he’s still got a few years left in him at 32 and you feel this will be the Blades’ last chance to lure him back over to England.

It certainly wouldn’t harm Heckingbottom’s men to have another midfield option though because John Fleck’s injury and Berge’s absence showcased how short they could be in midfield options if one or two players were ruled out in this department.

And that could end up being costly for them in their quest to win promotion, so they could do a lot worse than signing up Fer, a man who already has plenty of experience in English football under his belt.
