Rohl could be on the move this summer with his Owls future very much up in the air.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has dropped a massive hint about where his future lies amid speculation that he may leave Hillsborough this summer.

The icy slope that the Owls have been slipping down ever since the revelation about the missed March payment to the players has led them to this point. They ended the season in moderate fashion with nothing much to play for - what the supporters have been able to hold onto is their collective dislike for the owner, Dejphon Chansiri, and the hope that the manager will stay.

Rohl has appeared to be increasingly weighed down by the frustrating situations that have surrounded his place of work in recent months and has hinted on multiple occasions that his next years may not be spent in Sheffield.

Danny Rohl drops Sheffield Wednesday future hint

The biggest clue of all about where Rohl will be managing next season has been dropped by the man himself. In an interview with RB Leipzig-leaning blog RBLive that was released on Wednesday evening, the German named both the Bundesliga and the Premier League as two divisions that he would love to work in.

Clubs from two of Europe's biggest leagues, like Leicester City, Southampton and Leipzig, have been linked with Rohl. If any of them were to make a move for the German, they would have to pay a release clause as the 36-year-old's contract runs until the summer of 2027.

He suggested that he feels he may have taken the Owls as far as he can and that he is now looking for a new challenge in his career.

"I’ve always said that I’m very grateful to Sheffield for the opportunity I’ve been given there," said Rohl. "And I’m someone who always wants to develop the club further. And to do that, you have to weigh up how far that’s still possible or whether the maximum has perhaps already been reached under the current conditions.

"I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. But the Premier League is also a dream. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer."

Rejoining Leipzig, who he previously worked for as an assistant, may mean becoming a Champions League coach, should they qualify for next year's competition. Rohl feels he is ready for a challenge of that nature.

"If both sides are convinced that you’re the right coach, then there’s nothing wrong with taking the step to a Champions League club. I may have only been a head coach for just under two years, but I’ve been involved in football for a total of 16 years.

"As an assistant coach in Leipzig, Munich, and at the German Football Association (DFB), I’ve had the privilege of coaching great players, winning the Champions League, coaching at a World Cup, and experiencing a Premier League relegation battle with Southampton.

"That’s a package that gives me a lot of confidence that I’m ready for any challenge, as long as both sides are convinced of each other."

Sheffield Wednesday should be incredibly worried about losing Danny Rohl

It'll be very sad for the club and their supporters if the last time they saw Rohl in charge of their team was a meaningless 1-1 draw with Watford on the final day of this season. He has brought them so much joy and shock that it wouldn't feel right for him to go out on such a nothing result.

Think of how much he has done for Wednesday. What a better position they are in now going forward solely because of his brilliance. Miraculously saving them from relegation in the Owls' first term back in the Championship bought them an extra couple of years, at least, in the division, and this season they finished in the top half.
