Sheffield Wednesday stalwart Liam Palmer is reportedly attracting attention from clubs in the United States and can sign a pre-contract with interested overseas clubs this month.

A product of the South Yorkshire club's academy, the 32-year-old has made more than 400 appearances for the Owls in the 13-plus years since his debut - a League Cup tie against Bury in the 2010/11 campaign - but could leave as a free agent in the summer if new terms are not agreed.

Palmer won Wednesday's player of the year award last season as he helped his beloved club return to the Championship via a dramatic play-off run but has had to prove himself to new boss Danny Rohl.

It seemed at a point that the experienced head may be seen as excess to requirements by the German coach, and indeed he may still be, but a run in the side, including operating as a defensive midfielder in recent weeks, suggests that Rohl sees his worth.

Palmer could soon have a decision to make about his future, however, as the Sheffield Star has reported that clubs in the US, both in the MLS and lower leagues, are interested in him.

As he's entered the final six months of his current deal at Hillsborough, the 32-year-old can agree a pre-contract with overseas clubs that would see him join them in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether that's something the defender is interested in but, as per the Star, he has previously indicated he is keen to remain at Hillsborough and climb even higher up the list of Owls appearance-makers - sitting 12th right now.

Palmer is far from the only Wednesday player out of contract in the summer, which is something that Rohl suggested recently that he will look to address in the coming weeks.

A player worth keeping at Hillsborough

The versatile defender is a hugely popular figure at Hillsborough and recent weeks have shown that he is someone that the new boss will likely want to keep at the club beyond the summer - both for what he offers on and off the pitch.

If the Owls are to avoid the drop this term - they are three points from safety in 22nd after an upturn in fortunes under Rohl - then it would be no surprise to see Palmer play a key part.

Given he's a boyhood Wednesday fan and is keen to continue to build his appearance tally, you'd imagine that the assurances from the manager would be enough to convince him to stay put.

It's a conversation that Rohl will want to have at some point soon given Palmer is able to sign a pre-contract with the overseas clubs this month.
