Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to sign Stephen Welsh from Celtic on loan before the deadline tomorrow night.

The centre-back is fourth choice under Ange Postecoglou, so he has struggled for game time this season, featuring in just four league games.

Therefore, a temporary switch could be on the cards and the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (18:30) have revealed that Wednesday are looking to bring the Scotsman in on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

The update states that Celtic had been willing to sanction a move for Welsh this month but it’s unclear if that stance has changed as Moritz Jenz’s spell at Parkhead was cut short this month as he joined Schalke.

However, the Scottish champions did bring in Yuki Kobayashi who made the bench against Dundee United whilst Welsh was not in the squad.

Darren Moore is prioritising a centre-back ahead of the deadline after the Owls suffered a setback earlier this month when Cardiff City made the decision to recall Mark McGuinness after his impressive time at Hillsborough.

The verdict

This would be a real coup for Wednesday as whilst Welsh doesn’t get in this good Celtic side, he has been subject of interest from top-flight clubs across Europe in the past.

So, to get him to drop to League One would be great for Moore and he would be a key player for the Owls as they push for promotion.

It remains to be seen if they can get this over the line but it’s clear Wednesday want a centre-back in before the deadline.
