Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to pull off a great escape this season and avoid relegation back to League One.

The Owls were rooted to the bottom of the second division table with just a few points to their name when Danny Rohl took charge in October of last year.

The Yorkshire outfit remain in the bottom three, but now sit just four points adrift of safety with just under 20 games still to go.

Wednesday will be aiming to secure their place in the Championship beyond just one campaign, having earned promotion from the third tier last year.

The January transfer window offers Rohl an opportunity to make changes to the first team squad for the first time since joining the club.

Here we look at the latest transfer headlines surrounding the club…

Hungary international linked

According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday have been offered the chance to sign Hungary international Daniel Gazdag this January.

The 27-year-old is currently plying his trade with US side Philadelphia Union, where he has been a standout figure in recent seasons.

He has contributed over 50 goals from 114 appearances in MLS in the last few years, but it is now understood that he is weighing up his options in 2024.

However, it is unclear whether Rohl is going to pursue a move to bring him into the first team squad this month.

Michael Smith latest

Michael Smith has been linked with a departure from Sheffield Wednesday this month amid a lack of game time.

According to Alan Nixon, the size of his wages is currently proving a stumbling block.

Smith has been linked with the likes of Derby County, with enquiries having been made by multiple sides in the third division.

It remains to be seen whether this stumbling block will prevent a move materialising this January.

Smith has yet to feature for the Owls in the Championship this season, indicating he is not part of Rohl's first team plans at Hillsborough.

Rohl discusses Chansiri’s involvement

This is Rohl’s first transfer window as Sheffield Wednesday manager, meaning he is learning a lot about the processes around the club’s strategy in the market.

The German has revealed what his relationship with chairman Dejphon Chansiri is like in relation to the transfer market.

“We are always honest. He knows my thoughts and this is important, I have to convince him on signings and this is the reasons there is no (defined) budget, it is more about what makes sense and what doesn’t make sense,” said Rohl, via The Star.

“If I convince him, he agrees and then it is about the financial part from all sides; the players and the clubs.

“It can be difficult in negotiation [with other clubs and players], it goes up and down.

“The important thing is that I have a feeling from the sport side that this player will make us better as a team and that his performances will make us better in the future and this is the first step.”
