Details emerged last night that Lech Poznań and Poland defender Bartosz Salamon tested positive for chlorthalidone – a substance used to treat hypertension. Both the club and player have issued statements declaring their innocence.

31 year old Salamon gave the positive sample to drug testers following Lech’s UEFA Europa Conference League match against Swedish side Djurgarden IF. In the club’s statement, they reiterate their belief the substance does not bring any benefit to performance, and state that Salamon is not suspended and free to play until the matter is resolved.

Salamon’s season has been hampered by injuries, but he has been in strong form since his return after the winter break. He earned a call up to the Poland national team after a handful of withdrawals, and played 90 minutes in the win over Albania.

Salmon, too, took to social media to display his shock at the news:

“This news is a great surprise for me and those who know me know that I am very attentive to every  supplement or drug I take, and always consult it with the club doctor. I believe that everything will be explained and I will be able to continue playing without interruption. “ Bartosz Salamon (via Twitter)

The club themselves have also reaffirmed their backing of Salamon, and have agreed to fully cooperate with authorities to sort out the matter:

“It will be clarified how the detected substance got into the player’s body. The player did not take any medications or dietary supplements without the consent or consultation of the medical staff of KKS Lech. “We will do everything to clarify this matter of behalf of Bartek, of whose innocence we are convinced. He has our full support. With our participation, the player reports to anti-doping organisations with a request to re-test. Lech applies all procedures provided for by the regulations of the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). Therefore, as a club, we are ready to fully cooperate in order to clarify the matter.” Statement, Lech Poznań.
