Mexico and Uzbekistan played out a thrilling 3-3 draw on Tuesday in what will be a match to remember for both sides.
Scorers: Jimenez 21′, 81′, Antuna 88′; Abdikholikov 18′, Turgunboev 45+1′, Shukurov 90+2′
Depending on who you support, this result was significant for different reasons.
Uzbekistan made their presence known against Mexico right from kick-off and exploited a weak defensive line to strike first.
Goalkeeper Memo Ochoa and his teammates were stunned when Bobur Abdikholikov’s header beat defenders and found the top right corner for 1-0.
But in the blink of an eye, El Tri’s ever-reliable Raul Jimenez split defenders and easily tapped home the equaliser.
Yet another opportunity to splice through Mexico’s back line ended with Azizbek Turgunboev drilling home from range for 2-1.
Despite 19 shots and 63% possession, El Tri struggled to click together in hopes of a turnaround. Uzbekistan, in comparison, proved just how clinical they can be (two shots on target, two goals).
The saying, “It’s not over until it’s over,” proved to be oh-so-true in this sport, as late drama finished off this match.
Another individual moment from Jimenez dragged his side back in the match 2-2 before Uriel Antuna stabbed home a loose ball and celebrated appropriately.
His jubilation wouldn’t last, though, as Otabek Shukurov’s direct free-kick from outside the box beat Ochoa at the near post for 3-3.
The result will concern a lacklustre, 12th-ranked Mexico side (who also drew 2-2 against Australia this window) while 74th-ranked Uzbekistan achieved a massive result.
