Marco Silva has said his Fulham side were ‘clearly the best team on the pitch in the first half’ of their 3-2 win over Liverpool.
Fulham ended Liverpool’s 26-game unbeaten run in the Premier League with a first-half blitz downing the league leaders at Craven Cottage. Liverpool led in the contest when Alexis Mac Allister blasted in from distance, but the visitors were soon stunned by a Fulham fightback.
Ryan Sessegnon levelled after Curtis Jones miscued a clearance into the winger’s direction, before Alex Iwobi capitalised on another Liverpool error, intercepting Andy Robertson’s cross-field pass, to fire Fulham ahead.
The Cottagers made it three goals inside a 14-minute spell through Rodrigo Muniz. The Brazilian embarrassed Virgil van Dijk with a deft touch, before collecting the ball in behind and firing past Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool improved after half-time and pulled a goal back through substitute Luis Diaz, but Fulham held firm to take the points.
The win keeps alive Fulham’s hopes of European football, with the West Londoners climbing to eighth. Silva’s side are just five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, ahead of next weekend’s derby clash with the Blues.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Silva hailed his side after a ‘great, great performance’.
“It was a great, great performance from us, a big one [result]. Not just because it’s Liverpool but because we needed to bounce back after the last two games.
“Our first half was very, very good played at a very high level. We showed great organisation and commitment. We were clearly the best team on the pitch in the first half.
“In the second half there was a good reaction from Liverpool which we expected and our energy went down a little bit which was to be expected because it was so high in the first half. Overall though we deserved the three points.
“The aim was to be in the top half of the table at this stage of the season. We got three points. I want everybody really grounded.”
