Singo explains leaving Serie A for Monaco and dodges Juventus question | OneFootball

Wilfried Singo opened up about why he switched Serie A for Ligue 1 last summer and refused to ‘name names’ when questioned about Juventus’ interest.

The 23-year-old Ivorian right back spent four years with the Granata from January 2019 to August of last year, making 109 appearances across all competitions during that time. He did well in Turin and was bought by Monaco for around €10m last summer.

Singo has proven a smart signing by the Ligue 1 side and has performed well in his debut season, scoring a goal and providing an assist in his first 20 games. He was a regular feature in the Ivory Coast squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations back in February.

Speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio, Singo was first asked why he decided to leave Serie A last summer.

“I chose Monaco to play in the Champions League, the coach signed me to help the team achieve this objective.”

The 23-year-old right back was then asked about Juventus’ interest last summer.

“I won’t name names, but I can say that there were also Italian teams that wanted me. I chose Monte Carlo, and I am very happy to be here.

“It must be said that moving from Torino to Monaco is a step forward. Now I’m at a big club and I have to take the next step because Monaco aren’t Torino in terms of pressure. It’s up to me to do things right to help the team.”

Finally, Singo challenged the perception that Ligue 1 is a weaker league than Serie A.

“They are two slightly different league, I couldn’t say which is more competitive. Ligue 1 is difficult as is the Italian league, which is very tough and tactical.”
