Manchester United have reportedly joined Bayern Munich in the hunt for the signature of rising Borussia Dortmund Jamie Gittens.

The 20-year-old is a London native who started his career at Reading before joining Manchester City’s youth ranks in 2018. A couple of years later, he was poached by Borussia Dortmund, following in the footsteps of his compatriot Jadon Sancho.

The winger has been growing from strength to strength in recent years, and has now cemented himself as a regular starter in Nuri Sahin’s side. The young Turkish tactician has been heaping praise over his prized asset.

“You need 1-on-1 players who have speed. He’s maturing in his game. We talk a lot about risk and reward. When do I go into the 1-on-1, when do I prepare for it? When he gets rolling, he’s a fantastic player. He’s also made huge strides defensively,” said Sahin when discussing Gittens’ meteoric rise.

This season, the youngster has been in electric form, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

As is often the case with Dortmund’s brightest talents, Gittens has caught the eye of Bayern Munich. Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reveals that the Bavarian giants have already held talks with the player’s entourage as they look to sign at least one top-notch winger.

The transfer market expert adds Gittens’ summer departure will be increasingly likely if BVB fail to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the season. The club currently sits in a miserable 10th place in the Bundesliga standings following a disappointing first half.

Nevertheless, Plettenberg adds that Man Utd are also ‘seriously interested’ in Gittens, so they could attempt to lure him back to England.

With Marcus Rashford seemingly on his way out of the club, and Alejandro Garnacho possibly heading to Napoli, the Red Devils might need reinforcement on the wings.
