Goodman believes there are pros and cons for Leeds regarding a potential move for Ryan Kent, who is currently a free agent.

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes Leeds United could be taking a gamble if they sign current free agent Ryan Kent.

He made this claim to MOT Leeds News, having recently seen the winger struggle at Turkish Süper Lig outfit Fenerbahçe.

The Turkish outfit and the player decided to terminate his contract and part ways in October - and it was a decision that probably benefitted both parties - with the club reducing the cost of their wage bill and the player having the opportunity to make a fresh start elsewhere.

Leaving the club more than a month ago now, it may take him some time to get up to speed if he joins a club, but it doesn't seem as though the player is short of interest.

Leeds are thought to be long-term admirers of the player - and it was even reported by The Sun that League One outfit Leyton Orient were in the mix to sign him.

Richie Wellens' side haven't been able to get a deal over the line for him at this point, but with Kent remaining a free agent, he could still be an option for the O's. Orient could benefit from his presence, with the club currently sitting dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Ex-Rangers man Kent also attracted Saudi interest, but it remains to be seen where his next destination will be.

Don Goodman issues warning amid Leeds United's interest in Ryan Kent

Leeds saw quite a lot of activity happen in their wing department between the end of last season and the end of the previous transfer window.

Jaidon Anthony returned to his parent club following the end of his loan stay at Elland Road - and Crysencio Summerville secured a permanent switch to West Ham United after enjoying an exceptional 2023/24 campaign.

Largie Ramazani came in permanently as a replacement for Summerville and Manor Solomon joined on loan from Tottenham Hotspur - and their presence could mean that the Whites opt against a move for Kent.

Weighing up the pros and cons of this potential move for Kent, commentator Goodman said: "Leeds have been hit by injuries this season and it’s about covering all bases for them in signing players who will help shoot them up the Championship.

"Leeds need to build on what they have, which is arguably the strongest side in the Championship, and you’d imagine they’d be certainties to finish in the top two if they add another player.

"Ryan Kent was a high-level operator in the SPL and was sought after by some top clubs during his time at Rangers, so the talent is clearly there, but I’m not sure if that consistency is still there – why else would he be without a club?

"There’s always a balance to be had. If a player is out of form but used to be good, do you gamble on that?"

Leeds United should keep their options open ahead of the January window

With Ramazani spending time on the sidelines and Solomon struggling to be a real asset in the final third during the early stages of his time at Elland Road, it could be argued that another wing addition wouldn't harm their cause.

However, they need to keep a close eye on their wage bill and with Willy Gnonto and Dan James available as other options, they may not need Kent.

This could change with a departure, long suspension or a long-term injury, but for now, Kent may not be the best addition.

He has a very good CV and could be an asset at Elland Road, so it's worth Leeds keeping an eye on him.

At this stage though, waiting for the January window to open before making any further additions seems to be the best option.
