Some Rangers fans are resolute with the line of ‘you can’t keep sacking managers’ as a justification for continuing on with the mess that is Philippe Clement.
The line is that the continuity is a problem, and that we must just stick to the one man and get him backed fully.
That we give him time (ffs) and a chance to put his ideas into play and stop bouncing from coach to coach.
Thing is, do we tell that to Aston Villa, who went through a bunch of fails before they found Unai Emery?
Thing is, do we tell that to Aberdeen, who went through a bunch of fails before they found Jimmy Thelin?
Thing is, do we tell that to Chelsea, who went through a bunch of fails before they found Enzo Maresca?
Thing is, do we tell that to Arsenal, who went through a bunch of fails before they found Mikel Arteta?
The simple reason it isn’t working for Rangers yet is that we haven’t found (one of) the right men yet, and have made bad decisions when we have (Gio and Gerrard).
Forget this utter tripe the deluded fans come out with that we must stick with what isn’t working, because ‘it needs time’.
Two+ years of Erik ten Hag and Man Utd realised it was never going to get any better – no matter how much he spent, he could not manage that club, and they did the right thing letting him go.
The next choice might also be wrong, but that’s on the board – it’s their job to figure out the right package, and appoint him.
You keep going till you find the right guy, or one of the right guys. We had that with Steven Gerrard and failed to support him once we won the league, then we did the same with Giovanni van Bronckhorst after Sevilla.
Since then we’ve clearly appointed the wrong guys, it’s just as plain to see as the nose on your face – Beale and Clement were mistakes. Not obvious massive mistakes, but hindsight is 50/50, and now that we have that, they were clear wrong appointments.
And we’re quite sure a tonne of Rangers fans are frothing at the mouth reading this, raging with the name Alex Ferguson. Sure, ok, do you want to wait another 7+ years before Philippe Clement actually wins the league? Do you realise Celtic would have 61 titles by then?
And do you think he’s a patch on Sir Alex, who had already worked miracles with lowly Aberdeen (in Europe as well as domestically) proving his amazing stock hence Man Utd gave him time? It was also a gigantically different era, and bear also in mind, Liverpool were dominant in those days, Utd were nowhere. Do you really see Clement coming out and turning Rangers into the Man Utd of the early 90s if we give him another 7 years?
The fact is you can keep sacking managers till you find the right one, because plenty clubs have done it.
Or do you think Aston Villa should have stuck with Steven Gerrard and the Dons would have been better off with Neil Warnock?
