Rangers fans are raging at what star striker Cyriel Dessers said recently, with some believing his comments were completely unacceptable while others praised his honesty.
The Nigerian international spoke after Rangers’ well-received draw in Piraeus on Thursday, but it was his views on his own merits which got tongues wagging.
Now, before we go into it, his comments reminded Ibrox Noise of what Dessers’ biggest backers tend to say, which is that if this guy took all or most of the chances he gets, he’d be playing for Man City and not Rangers.
What did he say?
Much the same:
“This is life as a striker. I was watching the Champions League this week, and I see unbelievable strikers miss chances. So who am I, as Cyriel Dessers, not to miss chances? Obviously, you’re always going to miss more than you score. That’s the life of a striker. You know that there will always be a perception about that, but that’s life. If I would score three chances every game then I would probably wouldn’t be at Rangers.”
Dessers’ own defenders, such as Ibrox Noise ourselves, have said this before as well, but equally, we’ve never liked Rangers players talking our club down in any way. Nico Raskin did it, Alfredo Morelos sure did it, even Glen Kamara did at one point or another.
Was Dessers right? Yes, but then even Haaland, Vinicius Junior and Mbappe combined don’t score 3 chances every match – so it’s a bit of a ridiculous statement in itself.
But he was saying what fans have said ourselves – the differences is it’s fan banter, explaining why Cyriel Dessers is the best we can do at the moment, admitting our club isn’t in the best place these days.
But for Dessers to kind of say the same thing is either admirable honesty or unwanted condescension and disregard not to mention disrespect, depending on your point of view.
Ibrox Noise was aggressively condemning of Raskin when he described Rangers as ‘just a step’ in his career – we’ve never forgotten that.
But Dessers’ comments are as much self-deprecating and accepting his station in life as they are talking Rangers down.
He probably should not have said it, frankly, and he does have a historic habit of saying some things in the press he should have kept to himself.
He’s all we’ve got right now, and maybe he should learn a speck of discretion now and then.
