A great start by Newcastle, getting repeatedly in behind the home defence but poor shooting and the final ball not quite precise enough.
It looked just a question of time before a goal came.
It arrived on ten minutes BUT for Southampton.
The Saints getting a free-kick in the middle of the pitch, that shouldn’t have been, however, no excuse as the ball ended up down the right side, which when played into the middle, saw Bednarek with a free header right in front of goal.
Newcastle rocked by that and a bit of a flat ten minutes with Southampton already wasting time.
However, it all changed in the space of four minutes.
Isak winning a clear penalty but the referee not giving it somehow, as he was brought down from behind in the penalty area. VAR intervened, the referee looked at the TV replay, a spot-kick that the Swede coolly sent the keeper the wrong way.
Four minutes later and two for United two for Isak, a great Murphy through ball and a sweet finish just inside the post.
Almost a hat-trick, as Isak then in again on the right but a great save by McCarthy with his foot.
United deservedly leading 2-1 at the break, bouncing back from that early setback.
Dubravka to the rescue early in the second half. He initially made a mess of a corner but retrieved the situation himself, as an overhead kick was tipped over by the Newcastle keeper.
Up the other end and what a goal!
Isak dropping deep, a great header out to Gordon, who played Tonali through on goal. The midfielder calmly slotting home.
Ten minutes into the second half and Murphy cut in from the left and so unlucky as a left foot curler came back off the post.
A sweeping move on 64 minutes ended with a Gordon cutback and Joelinton’s shot beating the keeper but a defender keeping it out, even though he knew nothing about it.
No hat-trick for Alexander Isak, as with ten minutes to go, he and Bruno replaced by Willock and Miley.
Five minutes to go and a long ball seeing Fernandes through on goal, finishing past Dubravka.
A fortunate escape as VAR to the rescue with a marginal offside.
A couple of minutes to go and possibly Miggy’s last ever appearance, replacing Gordon.
Only a few minutes after coming on, Almiron dancing past a couple of defenders but a right-footed shot saved by the keeper.
A Willock effort just past the post from outside the box and that was the final whistle.
Totally deserved win and it could and should have been by more.
United back in the groove and making it 10 wins in their last 11 matches.
