Southampton centre-back and Duje Ćaleta-Car (26) is set to complete a return to Ligue 1 and join Lyon, according to a report this Wednesday from L’Équipe. The Saints, who were relegated into the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League, have reportedly struck a deal with Lyon to sell the Croatian international.
According to the French publication, both sides have agreed a transfer fee around the €5m mark. The good professional relationship between Lyon owner John Textor and Southampton’s Football director Rasmus Ankersen have reportedly proved vital in getting a deal done. The Croatian would reunite at Lyon with fellow countryman Dejan Lovren.
Ćaleta-Car was under contract with Southampton until 2026. However, he has yet to agree personal terms with Lyon. The 23-time Croatian international joined Southampton from Lyon’s bitter rivals – Olympique de Marseille. During an intense Ligue 1 clash between Lyon and Marseille eighteen months ago, Caleta-Car was pictured flipping the finger to the Groupama Stadium faithful. L’Équipe understand that Lyon must first submit the Croatian’s signing to the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog, due to the monitoring of their transfer activity by the authority.
