Southampton are eyeing a move for West Ham United striker Danny Ings in the summer transfer window, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper (printed edition, page 70) claimed that the Saints wanted to sign the 32-year-old striker in the January transfer window, but West Ham didn’t want to sell him as they had a shortage of options at that time.

That could change in the summer, as Ings does not feature in Graham Potter’s long-term plans. He is expected to move in the summer and could return to his former club.

Ings joined Southampton initially on loan from Liverpool in the summer of 2018, and later, the move was made permanent. He enjoyed a fantastic spell at St Mary’s, where he scored 46 goals in 100 games across three seasons.

He joined West Ham from Aston Villa in the January window of 2023 and hasn’t been able to make an impact for the Hammers. He has mainly played bit-part roles and found the net only five times in 68 games.

Ings is a vastly experienced striker who has scored 127 goals in his club career. Although the move to West Ham didn’t work out for him, he can reignite his career at his old club.

Southampton are likely to be relegated this season, and it will be interesting to see if Ings is willing to play in the Championship. He previously played for Burnley in the Championship, but that was a long time back.

He will be getting more game time at Southampton, which should boost his confidence. Unless any Premier League club show willingness to sign him, Ings must take the opportunity to return to his old club and play regularly.
