Southampton have had a rough start to the season. They sit rock bottom of the Premier League table heading into the November international break, a sign that things simply must change after the break.
However, what is scary (or perhaps relieving, depending on how you view it) for Southampton fans is that things could have been worse. Aaron Ramsdale has been one of the best Saints this season, making an impressive 36 saves so far in the campaign, only bettered by six keepers in the league.
That said, this week it was confirmed there'd been an unfortunate Aaron Ramsdale injury blow.
In a statement by the Southampton official website, the Saints confirmed: "Aaron Ramsdale has been forced to withdraw from the latest England squad due to injury."
The statement continued: "The goalkeeper will miss the Nations League contests against Greece and Republic of Ireland due to an injury picked up in Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolves. Ramsdale will now remain with the medical staff at Staplewood Campus over the international break."
Without a doubt, this is not good news for Southampton fans. The chances of the goalkeeper playing for England over the international break were slim anyway, so for him to be omitted from the squad on his own accord is not going to fill Saints fans with hope.
After the November international break, Southampton return to action, facing the current league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League. So, it's not due to get any easier for the Saints.
Russell Martin appears to be a manager under pressure at the moment. While Southampton are willing to stick by him and give him a redemption chance, the odds are against Southampton against Liverpool. Still, stranger results have happened in the Premier League.
Some reports suggest that Aaron Ramsdale needs to undergo surgery at Southampton. This is due to the injury being a suspected fractured finger, sustained in the match against Wolves.
The time frame for Aaron Ramsdale's return from injury remains to be seen. Since the news is still fresh, Southampton will be working on their own diagnosis and will therefore provide a progression plan, if necessary, to Ramsdale after this has occurred.
