Southampton's ex-boss Russell Martin recently gave his first public assessment since sacking. In doing so, he advised the Saints on how to prepare for their next Premier League return ahead.

Southampton's performances have been quite naive this season. And why won't they? After all, having an inexperienced young side, they have been led by 2 debutant Premier League bosses.

Still, know what's the best thing in Football? It allows one to correct mistakes and improve.

Positively, the improvisations have slowly begun at Southampton as well. The club's brilliant first-half performance against Liverpool is its best example.

Now, definitely, these small yet noticeable betterments come bright for the Saints. Yet, we will all admit it's time till the club actually benefits from them in the long run.

Know what's certain until then? A Championship spell next season. That's why this ought to be a good time to discuss what Southampton needs to prepare for their next Top Flight season, hopefully, just a year later.

Interestingly, for this, Saints ex-boss Russell Martin's recent words might surely help.

Russell Martin encourages Southampton to learn from ally clubs

Recently, given his inaugural interview after leaving the club, the Scottish man appeared quite neutral but wise in his comments. Upon being asked for ways to improve, Martin emphasized learning from their allies, who have shown remarkable improvement lately.

As quoted by the Daily Echo, Martin said: "If you look at Fulham and Brentford, they have real continuity. Forest went the opposite end so there's no right or wrong way I think. I think these teams show if you have a plan, it's really beneficial."

Pinpointedly, the last statement reveals the biggest issue that held back Southampton's success this season.

You might remember, be it summer or winter window, the Saints went without a proper strategy and suffered. And it's result? Signings and departures took place but never to their maximum utilization.

But, hey that's in the past now, and a fresh season awaits ahead.

Now post-relegation, the Saints would lose some key names, but extracting the best of their deals is important. Hopefully, a few out-of-the-box swap deals will help.
