Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen was one of Spain’s standout players on Thursday as he made his senior national team debut. Spain drew 2-2 away to his birth nation, the Netherlands, in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final. The second leg will take place on Sunday in Spain.

Born in the Netherlands, Huijsen represented their youth teams at various levels before switching allegiance to Spain. In February 2024, he gained Spanish citizenship, having moved there with his family at the age of five. Just a month later, he earned a call-up to Spain’s U21 squad, and last week, he received his first senior team selection.

The 19-year-old started Thursday’s match on the bench as Spain’s only center-back substitute. With that in mind, he likely anticipated making his debut at some stage, and an injury to Pau Cubarsí saw him introduced before halftime with the score at 1-1. Though the Dutch took the lead early in the second half, Spain, reigning European champions, found a late equalizer in stoppage time.

Huijsen impressed in his 50-plus minutes at Stadion Feijenoord, winning 100% of his ground duels and tackles. He also completed the most accurate long passes and made more passes into the final third than any other player in the match. Additionally, he maintained a 90% pass completion rate.

Those who have watched Bournemouth this season wouldn’t be surprised by his performance. For the Cherries, he leads the squad in interceptions, blocks, and clearances per 90 minutes. His club form caught the attention of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, leading to his international call-up.

Despite only joining Bournemouth in the summer of 2024, Huijsen has already attracted interest from top European clubs, including Real Madrid. When asked about Los Blancos’ reported interest, he remained focused:

"I'm not thinking about that right now. I'm thinking about ending the season well, and I hope I do. Then, when the time comes, we'll see. It makes you proud that such a big team is interested in you. I'll keep working and stay humble."

Huijsen, a former Juventus academy graduate, is shaping up to be one of the most sought-after players this summer. Liverpool is among the Premier League clubs reportedly considering a move, particularly with Virgil van Dijk’s contract expiring at the end of the season. Should the Dutch captain not agree to an extension, the Reds may push to sign Huijsen as his potential successor.
