Kian Fitz-Jim has not yet made a decision about his international career, according to Voetbal Primeur. The 21-year-old Ajax midfielder is eligible to play for Suriname, China, Hong Kong, and of course, the Netherlands. The latter three countries are already making desperate attempts to convince him.
Amsterdam’s starlet Fitz-Jim made his debut for Jong Oranje last week, saying to Voetbal International:
“It was really a goal of mine, at the beginning of the season, to get to Jong Oranje. I’ve gone through all the stages of the Dutch national team, but I had to wait for this one. So I’m definitely happy to be there, it’s another step. Ultimately, I want to make it to the Dutch national team.”
Fitz-Jim was born in Amsterdam, while his father, who was also born in the Netherlands, is of Surinamese and Chinese descent. His mother is from Hong Kong and emigrated to the Netherlands in childhood.
The young midfielder has reportedly never been to Suriname but has often visited Hong Kong – where he also holds an identity card and speaks Cantonese. Regarding his mixed heritage and how it could impact his international football career, he continued:
“Of course there are other countries I could play for. I always keep those options open anyway. (…) I have always played for the Dutch national team, so I never really had to think about it. Only now you see a lot of boys going to Suriname, I can play for them too, they called me about that last year. And in recent years China and Hong Kong have also tried to persuade me.”
“It’s difficult, you can also see with Couhaib Driouech how difficult that choice can be, you never know how it will go. But for now, this is the best option. We will see how it goes in the future.”
