On Sunday afternoon, there was Belgium Pro League action for Spurs loanees Luka Vuskovic, Alfie Devine, and their KVC Westerlo side, as they hosted Anderlecht, for match day 29 of the season – the penultimate game week before the split into the Championship round and relegation round.
As usual, Vuskovic was named in the starting XI by manager Timmy Simons, starting as the left sided central defender in a back four. Elsewhere, Devine was named amongst the substitutes, as he appeared in a match day squad for the first time since picking up an injury four weeks ago.
For those wondering, sadly - former fan favourite Jan Vertonghen remained an unused substitute, so there was no former Spurs vs future Spurs battle today. Just the 20 year age gap between the two of them.
It would be the dream start for the loanees’ side, taking the lead after just two minutes of the game. Then, near the midway point of the first half, they doubled their lead – which was enough to send them into the half time break two goals to the good.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Devine came on as a substitute for his return to the pitch. Westerlo saw the game out pretty comfortably from there, limiting their opponent to speculative efforts, as they ran out 2-0 winners.
It was another dominant display at the back from Vuskovic – whom recorded; 14 clearances, four blocked shots, one interception, one tackle, 59 touches, 31/33 passes, as well as winning 7/7 of his duels, 3/3 ground and 4/4 aerial, whilst having two shots and completing 1/1 dribble attempts.
After his supreme performance last week, the defender continues to get better and better. He has built on that with another clean sheet and top performance here – with Westerlo this time getting the win to go with it and make it the perfect afternoon all round.
Unfortunately for the player, he was not called up to the Croatia senior squad for their Nations League games against France later this month. You would expect an U21 call up instead, though from what we can see – there is nothing scheduled until September. Perhaps it is just a case of nobody being able to find out yet. We will likely find out soon enough anyway.
This hugely important win leaves Westerlo three points clear of 13th place in the Belgium Pro League – the final relegation round spot – with just one game to go before the split. That game will be against rock bottom of the league Beerschot on Sunday, for a 17:30 GMT kick off.
