Standard Liege bring in Hungarian defender from TSG Hoffenheim | OneFootball

Standard Liege have announced the signing of Attila Szalai from TSG Hoffenheim. The Hungarian international defender has joined the Belgian side on loan until the end of the season. There does not appear to have been a purchase option included as a part of the deal. Szalai joins what has been, on paper at least, one of the steeliest defences in the Pro League this season. In 21 games the side have conceded just 21 goals.

The 26-year-old central defender has had a varied career so far. He has spent time in Austria with Rapid Wien and in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol. He also spent two seasons in Istanbul with Fenerbahce, playing 117 games and scoring seven goals. In the summer of 2023 he moved to Germany to play for Hoffenheim but only managed five appearances for the side before being sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side Freiburg. He only made three appearances for them at the back end of the 2023/2024 season. His contract with Hoffenheim runs until 2027.
