Stats and form in the Women’s National League South so far | OneFootball

Back in August, the 2022/23 football season kicked off in the National League. It’s been an exciting few months in the Southern Division — so let’s take a look at the action so far.

Oxford United currently top the league table and are the only team to have not suffered a defeat so far. Watford sit in second, five points behind with a game in-hand, while Portsmouth are tied on points with the Golden Girls, but have played a game more.

At the other end of the table, Crawley Wasps and Plymouth Argyle currently sit within the relegation zone. It’s been tough for Crawley who are yet to win a league game. Although, they have managed to pick up points after draws against Bridgwater United, Gillingham and London Bees.

Argyle currently have six points, courtesy of two wins over both Crawley and Gillingham.

National League Southern Results

Of course, it wouldn’t be the National League without some unexpected results along the way.

In the past few months, teams have certainly proven that anyone can take points from anyone. Bridgwater United managed to take three points back home against Portsmouth thanks to Daisy Ackerman’s late winner in a five goal thriller.

Mid-table outfit Gillingham were able to cause an upset at Ipswich after they came back from 1-0 down at half-time, eventually coming out as 2-1 winners.

Eighth place London Bees started their season fairly well. The London team took points from most of their games in August and September, including a win over Portsmouth.

Newly promoted Billericay Town and Cheltenham Town have comfortably found their feet in the league. Both clubs currently sit in the top half of the table, both on 13 points.

Being promoted into tier three isn’t an easy task but both teams have made a statement to other teams with their results. Billericay managed to hold league leaders Oxford to a 1-1 draw back in September and have beaten Crawley, Gillingham and Plymouth since.

National League Southern Stats

One of Oxford’s summer signings was midfielder Leah Burridge. At the time of writing, Burridge is currently at the top of the leaderboard for most goals scored so far this season with seven. She is closely followed by Portsmouth’s Emma Jones who has six.

It’s been goals galore for Watford in their first season back in the National League. The club lead the way for the most amount of goals scored. In eight games the Hornets have managed to find the back of the net twenty five times.

Compared to last season, teams across the league have seen an increase in attendances at games. Both Oxford and Portsmouth have had some of the highest attendances at their home games. Gillingham Women had their first home game on Sunday the sixth of November and had an attendance of 447. MK Dons faced Oxford United in a midweek fixture and had an impressive crowd of 618.
