Stoke City have confirmed that Phil Jagielka has signed a contract extension to remain at the club for the rest of the season.
The 40-year-old had previously been on a deal that was set to expire next month, but with the former England man featuring regularly, it always seemed likely that the Potters would try to keep Jagielka.
And, that’s proven to be the case, as it was announced this afternoon that the centre-back would be staying, as Alex Neil praised the player when speaking to Stoke-On-Trent Live.
“To be honest, I didn’t know Phil all that well before I came in although I obviously I knew of him. But when you come in and see a guy still doing what he does at his age is incredible. I think his enthusiasm and his love for the game is something that really comes across.
“More importantly, he understands the game. Tactically he is excellent. He can speak to people on the pitch, he passes on information and he’s a good role model.”
Jagielka is expected to feature when Neil’s men take on Burnley tomorrow night.

The verdict
This makes sense as Jagielka is still contributing on the pitch and, as Neil says, he is a massive influence on the training ground and in the dressing room.
So, it’s a no-brainer to keep him for the rest of the campaign, when they will then reassess and see if he warrants another contract.
For Jagielka, he will be delighted to stay and he deserves plenty of credit for playing at this level at his age, which highlights his professionalism and quality.
