Sebastian Hoeneß continues to reshuffle his side as he makes six changes from Stuttgart’s defeat in Frankfurt. However, three of the changes were unavoidable after the suspensions of Ameen Al-Dakhil, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Angelo Stiller.
Despite their poor run in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart booked their place in the cup final after a stunning 3-1 victory over Leipzig. Meanwhile, Dieter Hecking only made a single change from the side that started the 3-1 defeat to Leverkusen. Myron Boadu is back in the starting XI for the first time since returning from injury.
However, the hosts were two goals down as early as the 11th minute. Jeff Chabot started the rout with a simple finish from the far post. Stuttgart’s captain Atakan Karazor, who also assisted the defender’s goal, put Ermedin Demirović through as the Bosnia-Herzegovina striker scored his 11th Bundesliga goal in the 11th minute.
Despite a spirited performance after conceding two goals, Bochum ended the half without a shot on target. Hecking’s two half-time changes also didn’t have the desired effect for the hosts. Three minutes after the break, Demirović was on target again with an expert finish.
After missing a couple of opportunities to complete his hat-trick, Demirović finally succeeded with only five minutes before the end of regular time. The close-range finish means the former Leipzig and Freiburg striker now has 15 goals in all competitions.
With the convincing win, Stuttgart ended a six-game winless Bundesliga run. The Swabians also reached the 40-point mark for the season. Bochum missed the chance to climb to the playoff spot.
