It’s no secret that the Black Cats are in the market for a new number nine this summer, and Mendy is a player who has been on their radar for some time.

However, for whatever reason, a deal is yet to be agreed, but it appears that could change now, as French journalist Josue Casse revealed that the Wearside outfit have made a fresh attempt to land Mendy.

He claims that Sunderland have offered €2-3m including bonuses for the 30-year-old, and that Mendy is still determined to join the Black Cats despite interest from Sampdoria, Lecce and Salernitana.

As well as that, it’s said that there is hope that this will be resolved quickly now that a new bid has been lodged.

Sunderland must bring in an experienced striker

Even though Sunderland have scored six goals in their opening two games, and played some fantastic football under Regis Le Bris, it is imperative that they do a deal for an experienced striker - and it seems Mendy is the one they want.

It was a problem position for the team all last season, and whilst Eliezer Mayenda has shown positive signs in the first two games, they need another option up top.

Mendy may lack experience in English football, but he has the physicality to cope with the demands of the Championship, and his goal record in recent years has been superb, as he has scored 16, 19 and 22 times in his last three Ligue 2 seasons.

So, whether it’s Mendy or an alternative, it is vital that a new player is added to the attack in the next ten days.

Alexandre Mendy could flourish at Sunderland

Following on from that, Mendy does look the right fit for the club, and his desire to pull on the red-and-white shirt is certainly going to endear him to the supporters.

The level of interest in Mendy suggests there is a good player there, and, as outlined above, he has the physical presence that Le Bris will want from his number nine.

That focal point could be key for Sunderland, as the likes of Patrick Roberts, Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke will all benefit from playing off a striker who is capable with his back to goal.

As well as that, at 30, Mendy would add some much-needed experience to a Sunderland squad that is still very young on the whole.

The big question is whether he can transfer his goalscoring form from France’s second tier to the Championship, but he has proven that he is cool and reliable in front of goal, and the Black Cats are a side that should create plenty of chances for the striker.

Sunderland’s transfer plans

The first two games have shown there is a lot of quality in the ranks at Sunderland, and, pleasingly for the club, they aren’t in a position where they’re desperate going into the final ten days of the window.

The priority is clearly a striker, and the fact they haven’t got one over the line just yet isn’t good enough, but they still have time to rectify that.

Other than that, Le Bris will no doubt be pushing to keep the classy Clarke, and they may look for reinforcements in other areas if the right players become available, but Sunderland are in a decent position overall.
